It's the bomb Justin.

Re: Bali
I went to a 90's weekend in November.
Messy.

Seriously though, I've been to Bali, and it was ok, but way too far for a family holiday from the UK.

Central America is closer, Mexico, Costa Rica etc

Re: Bali
whats the flight distance?

Re: Bali
From memory Bali is about 19 hours ish.

If you want the Far East experience, I'd try Thailand or Malaysia. Shave about 7 hours off your flight if nothing else.

Re: Bali
17 hours to Singapore.
I was there for a few days, then got a cheap Air Asia flight to Bali.

I'd definitely recommend the Night Safari at Singapore Zoo.

Re: Bali
I went to Bali about 20 years ago so it's prob changed a bit by now.
Hire a car and drive up the volcano
I stayed in poppies area
Cheap

The Aussies go to Bali like the British go to Spain, that's about it .

Joe - They us to, but after the bomb a lot of them started to inhabit Phuket instead.

Went to Bali once in 2001, I think it was, my over-riding memory of the place is that you are constantly hassled by street/beach hawkers. Nice island though.

I've just finished a 2 year stint in Indo.

I have been to Bali many times during that period. AVOID Kuta beach like the plague ... full of drunken Aussie backpackers ...

For a family take a look at Sanur beach.

However if you are looking for a quiet decent value for money resort to relax, don't go to Bali do some research on Lombok; amazing place.

Re: Bali
I went years ago to Sanur, it was ok, nothing more

You fly over a bloody load of beaches to get to that one and it is not that special

As said elsewhere, Lombok would be worth a look from what I hear

Re: Bali
In the lonely planet book (circa 1993) it said that Lombok was rarely visited outside of the tourist areas , so much so that if you went off the beaten track local kids would shout "moon people" and run off scared.

Surfing is good in Bali .

Re: Bali
If I was going there, I'd stay at Tirta Gangga then go out to the east coast near Amed.

I like Bali but if I go back to Indonesia, it'll probably be to the Banda Islands or Lombok. Never been to either but they both look good.

By the way, it'd be very hot and humid there at the moment.

Went a couple of years ago. It's absolutely lovely a bit further up from Kuta (where the Aussies are all going mad), although I'm not certain I'd take kids there. Depends how entertained they can be by a beach. Sea is rough and fun though.

Re: Bali
The Kuta-Seminyak area is actually pretty kid friendly. There are sorta kids waterparks and a zoo I think. You can get a nice villa with a pool or shared pool in Seminyak or Legian and you can have a nice relaxing time for a few days.

The 'real Bali' though is outside the Kuta tourist sprawl. Just depends if you could be bothered, or are just happy sitting by a pool next to a lovely villa.

Sitting by a pool next to a villa ?

Re: Bali
Yeah go.
Flight's nice and easy.
The place is like nothing else on Earth. No other place has sand and sea.
It's much cheaper than the Isle of Wight.
Everyone speaks English
They do fish fingers and burgers.
It's not overly hot at all.

Coffee 11:15 Mon Jan 18
Re: Bali
They don't do fish fingers.

Re: Bali
Agree with the sentiments blelow, ie why fly all that way? The Greek island are better thn Bali.
